My husband loves the flavor of maple so these cookies are definitely a keeper. They are always on my cookie plate at Christmas time.—Lillian Anderson, Webster, Wisconsin

2/3 cup butter, softened
1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon water
1 teaspoon maple flavoring
1-3/4 cups king arthur unbleached all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
frosting:
1/4 cup butter, softened
1-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
1 teaspoon maple flavoring
additional chopped walnuts, optional
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, cream butter and confectioners' sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in water and flavoring. Combine flour and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in walnuts.
2. Roll into 1-in. balls; flatten to 1/2 in. thickness with a fork. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks.
