This is a cookie that one of my aunts would make. She never gave anyone the recipe. I finally found this one on the internet and lo and behold this is as close as it gets. Ingredients:
1 c. butter, softened |
1 c. granulated sugar |
1 large egg |
3 1/2 c. all purpose flour |
1 tsp baking powder |
1 tsp ground nutmeg |
1/8 tsp salt |
1/2 c. buttermilk |
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, with a mixer on medium speed, beat butter and sugar until creamy. Beat in egg until well blended. 2. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda, nutmeg and salt. Add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating thoroughly after each addition. Gather dough into a ball, wrap tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm, 2-3 hours or up to 3 days. 3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a well floured board, roll out dough, a portion at a time, to a thickness of about 1/8 of an inch (keep remaining dough refrigerated.) Cut out with a 2 1/2 inch cookie cuter and place slightly apart on an ungreased baking sheet. 4. Bake for about 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer to a cooling rack and let cool. Store in an airtight container. |
