Nanny (Evelyn Lantz) was from Louisville, KY and passed this recipe to Grandma Loebach who passed to Gram and then to us. Nanny always said she'd live to be 100 and no older and that's what she did! Ingredients:
2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed |
water, or as needed |
2 tablespoons white sugar |
6 strips bacon |
1 onion, chopped |
salt and ground black pepper to taste |
Directions:
1. Put green beans in a large pot. Pour enough water into the pot to cover about 2/3 of the beans. Sprinkle sugar over the green beans. Add bacon and onion to the pot. Bring the water to a simmer over medium-low heat and cook until the beans are soft, about 2 hours. Season with salt and pepper to serve. |
