This is the only recipe of my great-grandmother's I have. This is dense and rich, with a crunchy crusty top, much like a pound cake. This cake needs nothing more than perhaps some powdered sugar on top, but if you want, feel free to ice it. Read more . This is good with berries, by the way.
Ingredients:
3 c. sugar
3 c. flour
1/4 t. baking soda
1 c. butter
1 c. sour cream
6 eggs, separated and at room temperature
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 300.
2. Beat the egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Reserve in a bowl and clean the mixer bowl.
3. Cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the egg yolks. Sift the flour and soda together, and add alternately with the sour cream. Gently fold in the whites just until incorporated.
4. Bake for 1 1/2 hours. Let cool on rack for 20 minutes before you unmold the cake.
