From my recipe files. Great old fashioned dessert. I used to grow blackberries but got injured by the huge thorns several times and pulled all the plants out!!! Ingredients:
1 qt. fresh or frozen blackberries ( seedless if you can find them ) |
1 cup sugar |
1 /4 tsp salt |
1/2 tsp. vanilla, almond or lemon extract |
1 1/2 cups flour |
1 tbs sugar |
2 tsp. baking powder |
dash salt |
1/4 tsp. nutmeg |
2/3 cup milk |
cream or whipped cream, optional |
Directions:
1. Combine the blackberries, 1 cup sugar, salt and extract in heavy duty Dutch oven or pot. 2. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, nutmeg and 1 Tbs sugar and salt. 4. Add milk; stir just until mixed. (Dough will be very thick.) 5. Drop by tablespoonfuls into six mounds onto hot blackberry mixture cover tightly and simmer for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in a dumpling comes out clean. 6. Spoon into serving dishes. 7. Serve with cream or whipped cream if desired. |
