This sandwich has been around longer than most of us. Traditionally they are deep fried. Mine are lightly browned in a frying pan and then baked. Notes: Dust lightly with powdered sugar. Serve with mustard, maple syrup, or apricot jam. Ingredients:
ingredients |
12 slices of whole wheat bread |
mayonnaise |
12 slices swiss or gruyere cheese |
6 slices ham |
6 slices of turkey or chicken |
nutmeg |
pepper |
2 eggs, lightly beaten |
1/2 cup milk |
18 tsp. salt |
1/4 cup butter |
Directions:
1. Preparation: 2. Spread bread with Mayonnaise. Make sandwiches with 2 slices of cheese and 1 slice of ham and either the turkey or chicken, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Close sandwiches and cut diagonally. Combine eggs, milk and salt. Melt butter in skillet over low heat. Coat sandwich halves with egg mixture. Lightly brown on both sides in butter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 400 degree F oven 3-5 minutes or until cheese begins to melt. Makes 6 servings. |
