My friend made this for me in college from the black family reunion cookbook, and I have been addicted to it ever since.
Ingredients:
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup crisco shortening
1 tsp salt
1 cake compressed yeast
1/4 cup luke warm water
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk, scalded
4 cups all purpose flour, sifted
1/4 cups melted butter or margarine
Directions:
1. Crumble yeast into warm water. Let stand 5 minutes.
2. In the meantime, add sugar, Crisco shortening, and salt to hot milk. Stir until shortening melts and sugar dissolves. Cool to luke warm.
3. Combine milk and yeast mixtures.
4. Add eggs and half the flour. Beat well. Add remaining flour. Turn dough onto lightly floured board. Kneed until smooth.
5. Place dough in well greased bowl. Cover and let rise 1 1/2 hours, until double in bulk.
6. Roll dough to 1/2 thickness. Cut into pieces size of small walnut. Roll into balls. Dip each ball in melted bitter. And place in 10 tub pan.
7. Cover and let rise until double in bulk.
8. Heat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 20 minutes. Turn onto serving plate. Serve hot!
9. Do not cut, pull apart.
