This is a quick and easy dessert that Mom made frequently, but I couldn't find the recipe. Today was my lucky day - my sister-in-law, Michele Thornburg, came up with a copy of it. She thinks it originated in an old Betty Crocker Cookbook. We had Apple Crisp for supper tonight - still warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream on top. Scrumptious! Ingredients:
8 cups apples, sliced and peeled |
2 teaspoons cinnamon |
1 teaspoon salt |
1/2 cup water |
1 1/2 cups flour |
2 cups sugar |
2/3 cup butter or 2/3 cup margarine |
Directions:
1. Butter a 9x13 baking dish. Spread sliced apples over the bottom of the dish. Add water. Sprinkle with cinnamon and salt. 2. Using a pastry cutter: blend flour, sugar, and butter until mixture is pea-sized and crumbly. Drop the mixture evenly over the apples. 3. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-60 minutes. Make sure it is bubbly and lightly browned before removing from the oven. 4. Serve while warm with vanilla ice cream. |
