Ingredients:
1 egg, beaten |
1/2 cup sugar |
1 cup molasses |
1/2 cup buttermilk |
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted |
5 cups sifted all-purpose flour |
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons baking powder |
3/4 teaspoon baking soda |
1 teaspoon salt |
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg |
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon |
1 teaspoon ground ginger |
vegetable oil |
1 cup sugar (optional) |
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (optional) |
Directions:
1. Combine egg and sugar in a large mixing bowl; beat well. Add molasses, buttermilk, and butter; mix well. 2. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and spices. Add to molasses mixture, blending well. Cover dough, and chill at least 1 hour. 3. Divide dough in half. Working with one portion at a time, place dough on a floured surface; roll to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut dough with a floured doughnut cutter. 4. Heat 3 to 4 inches of oil to 375°; drop in 3 or 4 doughnuts at a time. Cook 1 minute or until golden brown; turn and cook other side. Drain on paper towels. Repeat cutting and frying procedures with remaining dough. 5. Combine sugar and cinnamon; stir well. Roll doughnuts in cinnamon mixture until coated, if desired. |
