A traditional Kentucky Derby day treat! This refrigerated mint syrup will last for months.
Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 bunch fresh mint (about 1 cup, packed)
1 gallon good quality bourbon
Directions:
1. To make simple syrup, combine sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan.
2. Place over high heat and bring to a boil, stirring the mixture to dissolve the sugar.
3. Boil 5 minutes.
4. Remove from heat and add washed mint (still on the stem, just stir it all in).
5. Set aside for 24 hours.
6. Strain the mixture into a jar and discard the mint.
7. Chill julep cups or glasses in the freezer before making juleps.
8. Fill them with crushed ice.
9. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of mint syrup and 2 ounces of bourbon.
10. Garnish with sprigs of mint, if desired.
