There are many good cooks in our church. Every year we celebrate the Lord's Acre Day. The good cooks bring their best to be sold in the country store , or sold in auction to the highest bidder. This Chow Chow is one that I make sure to get at least 4 or 5 pints, to make it through the year. One of the cooks who used to make this, no longer does, and the other two have passed on. The recipe simply says, Chow Chow Old Recipe - Real Good. This year, I will try to make enough for the Lord's Acre. Ingredients:
1 gallon cabbage (chopped) |
1/2 gallon tomato (green, chopped) |
3 quarts onions (chopped) |
3 bell peppers (green, chopped) |
3 bell peppers (red, chopped) |
4 tablespoons mustard seeds |
4 tablespoons ginger (ground) |
2 tablespoons salt |
1 tablespoon black pepper |
1 tablespoon turmeric |
1 tablespoon cinnamon |
1/2 gallon vinegar |
4 lbs sugar (white) |
Directions:
1. Mix sugar with vinegar and bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. 2. Add spices and remaining ingredients. 3. Boil 20-30 minutes (until vegetables are tender). 4. Seal in sterile glass jars. 5. Makes 7-8 quarts or 16 pints. |
