This recipe came from a cookbook by Mary Starr my Mom had when I was little. Mary Starr was a local cooking celebrity, on one of the local TV Stations. All the recipes in the book were submitted by viewers, so, I don't know whose recipe it really was! Read more ! This is the first cake I ever made, and I was in 6th grade! Was at her house the other night, and remembered this recipe. It's amazingly simple, and so moist and rich, too! Great for office parties and church functions. Ingredients:

2 c. flour (plain) |
2 c. sugar |
1 c. water |
1/4 c. or 1 stick butter |
1/2 c. crisco |
1/4 c. cocoa |
2 whole eggs |
1 1/8 tsp. soda |
1 1/8 tsp. cinnamon |
1/2 c. buttermilk |
1 1/8 tsp. vanilla |
icing |
about half a box (approx 2 cups) |
1/8 c. milk (or 2 t) |
1/8 c. cocoa (or 3 t) |
1 stick butter |
1 1/8 tsp. vanilla |
Directions:
1. CAKE: 2. Combine sugar and flour in mixer bowl. 3. Melt butter and crisco in sauce pan 4. Stir cocoa and water in with melted butter and crisco 5. Bring to boil and pour over sugar and flour 6. Add buttermilk, soda, cinnamon, vanilla and eggs to ingredients in bowl. 7. Mix together (batter will be thin and may spatter). 8. Pour into 9 x13 pan that has been greased and floured. 9. Bake at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes, until toothpick comes out clean. 10. ICING: 11. Pour powdered sugar in mixer bowl 12. Melt butter in saucepan 13. Stir in milk and cocoa and bring to boil 14. Add to powdered sugar in mixer bowl. 15. Add vanilla. 16. Beat well and spread on cooled cake. |
