Gooey Cinnamon Rolls. Came from my husbands great grand mother.
Ingredients:
2 (1/2 ounce) packages dry yeast
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind (optional)
6 cups flour
Directions:
1. 1 1/2 pkg dry yeast.
2. 2 teaspoons sugar.
3. 1/2 cup lukewarm water.
4. Dissolve thoroughly and let stand 10 minutes or more.
5. Scald milk; add shortening, sugar and salt. cool to lukewarm or 75 degrees. Add enough flour to make a thick batter. Thoroughly stir yeast mixture and ass to above mixture. Then add beaten eggs and lemon rinds (if used); beat thoroughly. Then add enough flour to make a soft dough. Tun on a lightly floured board and knead until smooth and velvety. Place in a large greased bowl and let rise until double in bulk. Punch down and let rise again. Then shape into desired rolls.
6. Roll light mixture 1/2 inch thick. Spread with melted butter and sprinkle liberally with sugar and cinnamon. Roll as a jelly roll. Cut in 3/4 inch slices. Place in buttered pan, cut side up. Let rise until light and bake at 350 for 35 minuted or until done.
