Homemade applesauce is good served over many things—pancakes, waffles, pork, etc. Ingredients:
6 apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1-inch chunks (pink lady, fuji, or macintosh) |
2 pears, peeled, cored, and cut into 1-inch chunks (bosc, comice, anjou, seckel) |
1/4 cup sugar |
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup |
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice |
1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice |
Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a large nonaluminum saucepan; set over medium heat, cover, and bring to a simmer. 2. Cook for about 12 minutes, or until the apples are slightly softened. 3. Uncover and cook, stirring occasionally to break up the large pieces, for 7-10 minutes, or until the apples are soft but retain some texture. 4. Taste and adjust the flavor with more maple syrup or lemon juice; let cool and refrigerate. 5. Keeps for about 1 week, covered in the refrigerator. |
