This dish puts a zippy spin on traditional mac and cheese. Always a favorite of my fiance. Hope you enjoy! Ingredients:
3/4 cup dry bread crumbs |
2 tblspns melted butter |
8 ounces macaroni |
2 tblspns butter |
1 small onion, minced |
1 tablespoon all purpose flour |
salt and pepper to taste |
1/4 tspn dry mustard |
1 1/2 cups milk |
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Grease 2 quart caserole dish. 3. Place the breadcrumbs into a bowl and mix well with the melted butter; set aside. 4. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. 5. Add macaroni to boiling water and cook for 8-10 minutes until al-dente. 6. Drain, the place into prepared caserole dish. 7. While the pasta is cooking, melt remaining 2 tblspns butter in a saucepan over medium heat. 8. Stir in the minced onion and cook until translucent (about 4-5 minutes) 9. Stir in the flour, salt, pepper, and dry mustard until incorporated, then pour in the milk and bring to a simmer. 10. Simmer, stirring constantly until the milk has thickened, about 10 minutes. 11. Take the milk off the heat and stir in the cheddar cheese until melted. 12. Pour cheese sauce over the macaroni, then sprinkle evenly with the bread crumbs. 13. Bake until golden and bubbly, about 20 minutes. |
