An old cookie recipe from my grammie. She used molasses in many things she baked. This makes about 4 dozen. They are soft cookies and the dough can be kept up to a week in the fridge. Prep time depends on whether you can work with the dough right away. Read more . I usually chill it anyway.
Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
1 cup dark molasses
2 eggs
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons ginger
Directions:
1. Cream together the sugar and shortening.
2. Add molasses and unbeaten eggs.
3. Mix well.
4. Sift together dry ingredients and stir in.
5. If dough is too soft to work with, chill in the refrigerator for several hours.
6. Put 1/4 cup sugar in a small bowl.
7. Dip fingers into sugar, then pinch off a ball of dough and roll it to the size and shape of a walnut.
8. Dip the rolled ball into the bowl of sugar.
9. Place balls on greased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
10. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes.
