Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze. This recipe calls for grated cheddar integrated into the topping. The result is a delicate crispy layer of topping with a touch of savory flavor, over a tender, moist, sweet-tart filling. Mclntosh, Cortland or Granny Smith apples, cinnamon, salt. water, all-purpose flour, sugar, butter, cheddar cheese cvt Ingredients:
4 c. apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about five mclntosh, cortland or granny smith apples) |
1 tsp. cinnamon |
1 tsp. salt |
1/4 c. water |
3/4 c. all-purpose flour, sifted |
1 c granulated sugar |
1/3 c. butter |
1/3 c. mild cheddar cheese, grated |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°. Butter an 8-inch-square baking dish. 2. Layer apple slices in dish, sprinkle with cinnamon and salt, and add water. 3. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and butter with a pastry blender. When blended, add the grated cheese to the topping and mix it in with a fork. Add topping to baking dish, covering the apples completely. 4. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is golden. 5. Serve the crisp with ice cream or cream if desired. |
