This is an old recipe that is lovely in the wintertime. I like it on the rocks but was it originally served as an after dinner cordial at a traditional Lithuanian dinner. It reminds me of cinnamon candy but much smoother and is a welcome treat on a snowy night. Ingredients:
750 liters rye whiskey (does not need to be expensive) |
2 cups honey |
1 cup water |
2 (8 ounce) jars maraschino cherries |
1 orange |
6 cinnamon sticks |
1 tablespoon caraway seed |
Directions:
1. In a saucepan combine 1 cup water, honey, cherries, sliced orange, and caraway seeds. 2. Bring to a simmer for 20 minutes, stirring often. 3. Let cool and then put in a storable container. 4. Add whiskey. 5. Let sit for a week and then remove oranges. ( I let this steep for about 30 days.). 6. I strain the caraway seeds out and remove the cherries as well once I move the liquer into bottles. 7. My DMIL served a bowl of the fruit after dinner. Be careful- it packs a punch as I found out.the hard way. LOL. |
