I was at my friends house as a little girl, some 48 years ago, and her mom let us help her make these cookies. We had so much FUN decorating the faces. It is a memory that I truly cherish and one that I want to share with you. These are THE BEST cookies, and ones that kids love to make, so be creative! Preparation time does not include the time to chill the dough. The time varies depending on how much time you take to make your face parts, and decorate your cookies.
Ingredients:
1 cup butter or 1 cup margarine
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
2 1/2 cups flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup small spiced gumdrop, sliced into eyes, nose, mouth and ear shapes (remove black gumdrops)
Directions:
1. Cream butter, confectionary sugar, and vanilla.
2. Beat in egg.
3. Sift together flour, soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
4. Gradually stir into creamed mixture. Mix well.
5. Shape dough into roll 2 inches in diameter and 12 inches long. Wrap in waxed paper.
6. Chill several hours or overnight.
7. When ready to bake preheat oven to 375.
8. Cut into slices 1/4 thick.
9. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
10. Shape gum drops into eye, nose, mouth and ear shapes. The kids love this part!
11. Decorate cookies with gumdrop pieces to make the faces.
12. Bake for about 12 minutes, or until lightly browned.
13. Cool slightly before removing from pan.
14. Place on cookie rack to cool.
