Garam masala [gah-RAHM mah-SAH-lah] is an Indian spice mix found in the spice section of large supermarkets or specialty shops. Ingredients:
1 1/2 tablespoons butter or margarine |
1 large onion, chopped |
2 garlic cloves, minced |
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger |
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric |
8 ounces dried red lentils |
3 cups chicken broth |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
1/2 teaspoon garam masala |
hot cooked rice |
Directions:
1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add onion, garlic, and ginger. Saute until golden. Stir in turmeric and lentils; cook, stirring occasionally, 1 to 2 minutes. 2. Stir in broth, and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes. Stir in salt and garam masala; cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes or until lentils are tender and mixture is thickened. Serve with hot cooked rice. |
