These cookies are a tradition at Greek weddings and are usually made by both of the mothers. Then, of course, there are the inevitable comparisons between the two. LOL These also make a great holiday cookie. If you like you can substitute walnuts or hazelnuts (browned) if you don't like almonds. Read more .This is my mother's recipe. Ingredients:
1 lb unsalted butter |
1/2 c confectioners sugar |
2 egg yolks |
2 tsp pure vanilla extract |
1 tsp baking powder |
6 cups cake flour |
1 cup chopped almonds (that have been browned in the oven) |
1 oz whiskey |
whole cloves |
Directions:
1. Soften butter at room temp until very soft. 2. Put in mixer and beat well; add sugar and beat until fluffy and light colored. 3. Add egg yolks and vanilla and beat thoroughly. 4. Fold in nuts if desired. 5. Sift flour and baking powder and mix slowly into butter mixture. 6. Turn dough out onto clean surface and sprinkle with whiskey and knead thoroughly. 7. Roll by hand into 1 1/2 balls and press them down slightly to form a disc shape. 8. In the center insert a whole clove. 9. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 for approx 30 minutes or until desired color being careful not to burn the bottoms. 10. Dredge in confectioners sugar while warm but not hot. 11. Then before serving sprinkle with more confectioners sugar using sifter. |
