A classic breakfast dish from South India. An excellent quick, easy and nutritious dish. Ingredients:
cream of wheat (original) - 2 cups |
water - 4 1/2 cups |
chopped onions - 1 cup |
jalapeno peppers - 1/2 (or as required) |
salt - 3/4 tsp |
oil - 2 tbsp |
mustard seeds (black if available) - 1/2 tsp |
dried split peas - 1 tsp |
chopped cilantro - a handful |
juice of 1 lemon |
Directions:
1. Cut onions and Jalapeno in small pieces. 2. Heat oil in a pan. 3. Add mustard seeds, dried split peas and fry for 30 seconds. 4. Add onions and jalapeno and fry for about 2 minutes. 5. Pour water to this mixture and let it boil. 6. Add salt and mix. 7. Now add cream of wheat slowly while mixing gently at the same time. It is important to mix as you pour or lumps will form. 8. Once all the water is absorbed, add lemon juice and cilantro. 9. Mix gently and serve. |
