This is a traditional Polish side dish or main meal for a vegetarian. Sauerkraut takes on a very different flavor when you bake it. (Try it for yourself and see!) I eat sauerkraut right from the bag though, so I love it however it's made :) Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter + 2 tablespoons butter, divided |
2 onions, chopped |
1 large portobello mushroom, sliced |
1-1/2 cups white mushooms, sliced |
1/4 medium head of cabbage, thinly sliced |
1-32 ounce jar of sauerkraut, drained and presse |
1/2 teaspoon white sugar |
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme |
salt and pepper to taste |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. In a skillet, heat 4 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. 3. Add onions and mushrooms and sauté until tender. 4. In a saucepan over high heat, boil cabbage for 10 minutes. Drain. 5. In a 9x13-inch baking dish, combine onions, mushrooms, cabbage, sauerkraut, sugar, thyme, salt and pepper. 6. Mix well. 7. Dot with remaining 2 tablespoons of butter on top. 8. Cover and bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. |
