This is a recipe adapted from a Norwegian cookbook, made each year by my cousin's husband. Note: The almonds and raisins can be added for flavor while standing, then strained before pouring. Ingredients:
1 (26 ounce) bottle dry red wine (cabernet sauvignon) |
1 (26 ounce) bottle vodka, 100 proof (or acquavit) |
1 cup sugar |
2 sticks cinnamon |
5 cloves |
6 cardamom seeds, crushed |
1 orange peel, spiral |
1/2 cup slivered almonds |
1/2 cup raisins |
Directions:
1. Combine wine, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and orange peel in saucepan. Stir to blend. 2. Let stand 3-4 hours. 3. Heat, but do not boil. 4. Light with a match and pour burning into heatproof cups containing a few almonds and raisins. |
