From my favorite cookbook, the 1969 Betty Crocker cookbook. These soft cookies have a warm flavor from the brown sugar and vanilla and a crunch from walnuts. They are topped with fantastic browned-butter frosting. Ingredients:
cookies |
2 3/4 c. flour |
1/2 c. packed brown sugar |
1 tsp. salt |
1/2 tsp. baking soda |
1 c. dairy sour cream |
1/2 c. shortening |
2 eggs |
1 tsp. vanilla |
1 c. chopped nuts, if desired (i use walnuts) |
browned butter glaze |
1/2 c. butter |
2 c. confectioner's sugar |
1 tsp. vanilla |
2 - 4 tbsp. hot water |
Directions:
1. Mix thoroughly all ingredients except glaze. If dough is soft, cover and chill. 2. Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Drop dough by level tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 10 min. or until almost no imprint remains when touched with finger. 3. Immediately remove from baking sheet; cool. Spread with Browned Butter Glaze. 4. Browned Butter Glaze: 5. Heat butter over low heat until golden brown. Remove from heat; blend in confectioner's sugar and vanilla. Stir in 2 - 4 TBSP hot water until of spreading consistency. |
