Now that the holidays are over, I'm ready for quick and easy hot meals. These are actually great for a party because they can be made ahead and popped in the oven when you're ready. I love the crunchy bun and the gooey center - if you can get your hands on some good dark rye buns, that's my favorite, but white or wheat buns will work, too. Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter, softened |
2 tablespoons beer and brat mustard, or any grainy, horseradish-style mustard |
2 teaspoons poppy seeds |
1/4 cup finely diced sweet onion |
1 pound of sliced smoked ham from the deli |
6 slices good quality swiss or emantaler or gruyere cheese |
6 buns (dark rye buns are the best, but you can use white, wheat, or whatever) |
Directions:
1. Mix together the butter, mustard, poppy seeds and onion; spread this on one side of each bun, using up all of mixture. 2. Top spread with ham slices, then a slice of cheese; place other half of bun over cheese and gently squeeze the bun together just a bit. 3. Tightly wrap each sandwich individually in foil, sealing foil well. 4. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. 5. Unwrap and serve sandwiches hot. |
