For an extra-special treat, make your own hot chocolate sauce and serve it warm over a dish of ice cream, or a slice of chocolate, angel-food or pound cake, topped with some real whipped cream…your friends and family will love you for it. Read more . This recipe dates back to 1974, and came from my mother, who always served it over a big bowl of vanilla ice cream, topped with whipped cream and salted peanuts – fantastic! It is so simple and tastes so divine, you’ll wonder why you’ve been buying bottled ice cream sauce all these years… Ingredients:
1 cup sugar |
5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa (you can use the special dark if you want a darker chocolate sauce) |
1 heaping tablespoon all-purpose white flour |
1 cup boiling water |
1 tablespoon butter |
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract |
Directions:
1. In a medium saucepan, stir together sugar, cocoa and flour. 2. Pour boiling water over this mixture and bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat, being careful not to scorch the bottom of the pan. 3. Boil sauce for 7 minutes. 4. Remove pan from heat and add butter and extract; whisk the sauce well to incorporate the butter and extract into the sauce. 5. Place a piece of waxed paper (not a tight lid) loosely over the pan and allow sauce to cool a bit before pouring it over ice cream or cake. 6. Store cooled leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator. |
