I've always known that brown sugar was brown because of molasses, but until I happened upon a do-it-yourself video while roaming the blogosphere, I would NEVER have guessed you could actually very simply make it at home. This will yield a medium-coloured sugar; increase or decrease the amount of molasses to lighten or darken as desired.
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1/3 cup molasses (cooking molasses)
Directions:
1. Put sugar and molasses in mixer and using a paddle-type attachment, mix on medium speed for about 4 minutes, stopping to scrape the sides of the bowl occasionally.
2. Voila, brown sugar.
