Grandma Helen's recipe from family collection. This recipe is for the sauce and is fabulous over a yellow cake. Note that 6 TBSP flour can be substituted from 3 TBSP cornstarch. Ingredients:
2/3 cup sugar |
6 tablespoons flour |
1/4 teaspoon salt |
3 cups milk |
3 egg yolks |
1 tablespoon butter |
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla |
Directions:
1. Mix the first 3 ingredients and gradually add 3 cups milk. Cook until thickened, use a double boiler. 2. Beat 3 egg yolks. Add to sauce in boiler slowly and stir. Cook for a few minutes, add butter and vanilla. Serve over warm yellow cake. 3. **If you're in a hurry, I've made the above recipe by following same basic steps but cooking in the microwave in a glass dish rather than on the stove. Microwave in 30 second increments and stir frequently. |
