Hulshki is generally a side dish served without meat but mama always added ground beef, bacon, or kielbasa to make it a meal. Love this recipe and is one of my favorite comfort foods. It is an easily adaptable and simple dish. Read more . Give it a try and make it your own. Garlic salt and cracked pepper really adds flavor to this dish. Ingredients:
1 medium head of cabbage, cut up |
1/2 bag of egg noodles, cooked in salted water and drained (aprox 6 - 8 oz, dried) (i used medium in the pic) |
1 onion, chopped |
coarse ground or fresh cracked black pepper |
garlic salt |

bacon grease or butter or both |
1# bacon, ground beef, or kielbasa |
Directions:
1. Original Recipe - Meatless 2. Using bacon grease or butter: 3. Fry cabbage and onions in bacon grease or butter for about 5 - 10 minutes or so 4. Season to taste 5. Turn heat down and cover 6. Cook until cabbage is tender enough to your liking 7. Stir in noodles during last 5 - 10 minutes of cooking 8. Mama's Recipe 9. Fry bacon, ground beef, or kielbasa 10. Drain grease 11. Add butter (unless you're using bacon then just use the grease), cabbage, and onions 12. Fry for about 5 - 10 minutes 13. Season to taste 14. Turn heat down and cover 15. Cook until cabbage is tender enough to your liking 16. Stir in noodles during last 5 - 10 minutes of cooking 17. ~Optional~ 18. If you like, after you've cooked the halushki you can stir in a couple of Tbsp of butter for taste. |
