I found this recipe on when searching for naan bread to make with curry since the stuff in the grocery store is not good and very expensive. I have made this several times, both with and without garlic, and it has always been a hit. Read more . Interesting to me, I assumed all naan was grilled yet most of the recipes I find call for baking or doing under the broiler (I guess that is sort of grilling). This one can be done on an outdoor grill or, as I do, indoors on an electric grill. No-stick spray is great for reducing the fat rather than using butter when grilling. Ingredients:
1 pkg active dry yeast |
1 cup warm water |
1/4 cup white sugar |
3 tbsp milk |
1 egg, beaten |
2 tsp salt |
4 1/2 cups bread flour |
minced garlic to taste (i use 2-3 tsp) (optional) |
1/4 cup butter, melted |
Directions:
1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl and let stand 10 min until frothy. 2. Add milk, sugar, egg, salt and enough flour to make a soft dough. 3. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes on floured surface (until dough is smooth) 4. Form dough into a ball and let rise, covered, in a well-oiled bowl for 1 hour. The dough should double in size. 5. Punch down dough and knead in garlic if using. 6. Form dough into golf-ball sized balls and let rise 30 minutes (until doubled). 7. Preheat grill while balls are rising. 8. Flatten each ball into circle (I use my hands but you can roll them) 9. Brush with butter (or spray with no-stick) and cook on grill 2-3 minutes, until puffy and light brown. 10. Brush uncooked side with butter (or spray again) and flip, cooking for another 2-4 minutes until browned. 11. Repeat until all naan are cooked. 12. Serve hot with curry of your choice. |
