Ingredients:
4 medium-size green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch slices |
1 teaspoon sugar |
1 teaspoon salt |
1/2 teaspoon pepper |
2 cups soft breadcrumbs |
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese |
1 tablespoon butter or margarine, softened |
Directions:
1. Arrange one layer of tomato slices in the bottom of a lightly greased 1 1/2-quart casserole. Combine sugar, salt, and pepper; mix well. Sprinkle tomatoes with about one-third each of sugar mixture, breadcrumbs, and cheese. Repeat layers, omitting cheese from top layer. 2. Dot butter over top of casserole. Cover and bake at 400° for 1 hour. Add remaining cheese. Bake, uncovered, 5 minutes or until cheese melts. |
