This recipe comes from Hamburg, Germany where it's called 'Bohnen und Birnen mit Speck.' It's a delicious variation of a traditional dish. Ingredients:
1/2 pound thick sliced bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces |
1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces |
3 bosc pears, cored and cut into quarters |
1 quart water |
salt and pepper to taste |
Directions:
1. Cook the bacon in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until partially cooked but not brown, 5 to 6 minutes; drain on paper towels. 2. Combine the drained bacon, green beans, and pears in a large saucepan; pour enough water over the mixture to cover. Bring to a boil; reduce the heat to low and simmer until cooked and tender, about 30 minutes. 3. Remove from the pan to a serving dish with a slotted spoon, draining excess water. Season with salt and pepper to serve. |
