This recipe has been in the family for years. I can't remember a time when Mama or Granny weren't baking these, and Mama says she remembers them from when she was a young teenager (she is now 80). I love these, not only because they are so good, but you can leave them in the refrigerator for several days before you bake them. Read more . These are my all time favorite cookies.
Ingredients:
1 cup shortening
2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped dates
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
Directions:
1. Cream shortening and sugar.
2. Add eggs and beat well.
3. Add nuts, dates (after dredging in a small amount of the flour) and vanilla. Beat well.
4. Sift dry ingredients together, add to mixture. Mix well.
5. Make into long rolls and wrap in wax paper or plastic wrap. Let stand in refrigerator until firm enough to slice.
6. Slice 1/4” thick and bake on cookie sheet at 375° for 10 minutes.
