A recipe handed down by my maternal grandmother. Ingredients:
2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed |
1/2 cup butter, softened |
1/2 cup shortening |
2 eggs |
1 cup buttermilk |
2 1/2 cups flour |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 teaspoon baking powder |
1 teaspoon cinnamon |
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg |
1/4 teaspoon clove |
1 cup raisins |
1 cup nuts, chopped |
granulated sugar |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. 3. In a large bowl, cream butter and shortening with brown sugar. 4. Add eggs; mix well. 5. Add dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk; mix well. 6. Stir in raisins and nuts. 7. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto baking sheet. 8. Sprinkle with granulated sugar. 9. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden in color. 10. Cool on wire rack. |
