My mom got this recipe from her mom. The bars are moist and spicy, and keep well. You can drizzle the bars with a powdered sugar glaze, but usually mom served them plain. Ingredients:
1 cup raisins |
1 cup water |
1 cup sugar |
1/2 cup shortening or 1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine |
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon |
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg |
1/2 teaspoon clove |
2 cups flour |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 cup chopped pecans or 1 cup walnuts |
1/2 cup chopped dates |
Directions:
1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F. 2. Grease a 10x15-inch jellyroll pan and set aside. 3. In a medium saucepan, bring the raisins, water, sugar and shortening to a boil. 4. Add cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves and allow to cool. 5. While the spice mixture is cooling, sift together the flour, salt and baking soda. 6. Add to cooled mixture and stir well. 7. Stir in chopped nuts and dates. 8. Spread in prepared pan and bake for about 30 minutes. 9. May be frosted, or very good left plain Makes 25 (2 x 3 ) bars. |
