My sister submitted this recipe to her church's cookbook. She got it from a close friend of my mother, who, in turn, got it from her mother-in-law. My Mom says its the best, soft white sandwich bread sh'e ever eaten. I haven't tried it yet, but am putting it here for safekeeping. Ingredients:
3/4 cup sugar |
2 1/4 teaspoons yeast (1 package) |
4 cups warm water |
3 teaspoons salt, heaping |
10 cups flour |
Directions:
1. Mix 1/2 cup of the sugar with the yeast in 1 cup warm water. 2. Sift the flour with the remaining sugar and salt. 3. Add the remaining 3 cups warm water and the yeast mixture to make the dough. 4. Knead well, then place in greased or buttered bowl, cover, and rise for 1 hour. 5. Knead again and let rise for 2 1/2 hours. 6. Punch down and form into 4 loaves. 7. Place loaves in greased and floured loaf pans, cover, and let rise for 1 hour. 8. Bake at 275 degrees for 50 minutes. |
