My great-Grandma was famous in her hometown for these doughnuts...they are good, but not very health-conscious. Feel free to substitute veg. shortening for the lard....you'll loose some of the flavor, but then you'll loose some of the cholesterol too!
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups sugar
9 tablespoons melted lard (i know, i know)
3 eggs
2 teaspoons salt
4 cups sour milk (4 tsp vinegar to 4 cups milk)
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 tablespoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
7 -8 cups flour
Directions:
1. Add baking soda to the sour milk.
2. Mix sugar, shortening, eggs, and salt in a large bowl.
3. Add sour milk and soda mixture.
4. Sift flour, baking powder, and nutmeg into the previous ingredients.
5. Mix until easy to handle.
6. Roll to about a 1/2 inch thickness (as if for biscuits) then cut with a doughnut cutter.
7. Add flour as necessary to prevent excessive stickiness.
8. Fry in deep fat at 350°F until brown on one side.
9. Turn and brown the other side.
10. These are good plain, but can be coated with powdered sugar while warm.
