Wanting to preserve some heirloom recipes... Ingredients:
2 cups sugar (divided) |
4 tablespoons butter (originally written 'lump of butter, size of an egg') |
1 cup milk |
2 teaspoons baking powder |
1 1/4 cups flour (enough to make a stiff dough) |
2 cups sour cherries |
2 tablespoons butter |
2 cups hot water |
Directions:
1. Make a stiff dough from 1 cup sugar, 4 T softened butter, milk, baking powder and flour. Add flour in gradually until the dough is stiff but by no means dry. 2. Smear dough into a buttered 9X13 pan. 3. Make sauce of cherries, remaining cup of sugar, 2 T butter and hot water. 4. Pour cherry sauce over patter and bake at 350 degrees F until dough is baked through. If serving hot pass cream or ice cream to accompany. 5. May substitute blackberries or raspberries if desired. |
