In my family, this is a once-a-year recipe for Christmas cookies. Two days before Christmas, as is tradition, we make a triple or quadruple batch, invite everyone over, and spend a few hours baking and decorating. The cookies themselves are highly acclaimed, especially when topped with a simple powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla frosting. Servings, yield, and times are all guesses. Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups sugar |
1 cup shortening |
2 eggs |
1 cup buttermilk |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
4 cups flour (divided) |
2 teaspoons baking powder |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
Directions:
1. With a mixer, combine sugar, shortening, and eggs. 2. Add buttermilk and baking soda. 3. Add 2 c flour, baking powder, and vanilla. 4. Add another 2 c flour with spoon. 5. Roll out on a floured surface and cut into shapes. 6. Bake at 400 degrees on greased cookie sheet for about 10 minutes. |
