âThis wonderful bread, made from my grandmotherâs recipe, won Best of Show at the New Mexico State Fair,â says Marjorie Rose of Albuquerque. âItâs so good! My grandchildren love it, too.â Ingredients:
1/2 cup shortening |
3/4 cup sugar |
2 eggs |
1-1/2 cups king arthur unbleached all-purpose flour |
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
3/4 cup 2% milk |
glaze: |
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar |
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel |
2 to 3 tablespoons lemon juice |
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. 2. Pour into a greased 9-in. x 5-in. loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Place pan on a wire rack. 3. Combine the glaze ingredients; immediately pour over warm bread. Cool completely before removing from pan. Yield: 1 loaf (16 slices). |
