Allspice adds a bit of a twist to typical barbecue meatballs in this recipe from Nancy Horsburgh of Everett, Ontario. Ingredients:
2 eggs, lightly beaten |
2/3 cup milk |
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish |
1-1/4 cups soft bread crumbs |
1-1/2 pounds ground turkey or beef |
1 cup water |
1/2 cup chili sauce |
1/2 cup ketchup |
1/4 cup maple syrup |
1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce |
1-1/2 teaspoons ground allspice |
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard |
Directions:
1. In a large bowl,combine the eggs, milk, horseradish and bread crumbs. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into 1-1/2-in. balls. 2. Place meatballs on a greased rack in a shallow baking pan. Bake at 375° for 15-20 minutes or until meat is no longer pink; drain. 3. In a large saucepan, combine the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil; add the meatballs. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Yield: about 3-1/2 dozen. |
