German Plum Cake Zwetschgenkuchen |

A perfect after Sunday meal dessert. One of my favorites! Time consuming, but worth it.... Ingredients:

1/2c. softened unsalted butter |
2c. all-purpose flour |
1/4c. sugar |
1tsp. baking powder |
1/2tsp. fresh grated lemon zest |
1/4tsp. ground mace |
1 egg; beaten |
2tbs. cold water |
filling |
2lbs. purple or red plums, halved and pitted (5 cups) |
4c. sugar |
2tbs. all-purpose flour |
1tsp. ground cinnamon |
1/4c. slivered almonds |
Directions:
1. Prepare Pastry: 2. Cut butter into flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, lemon zest and mace until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Mix egg and water; stir into flour mixture. Gather pastry into a ball; knead just until smooth, 5 or 6 times. Press evenly on bottom and side fo ungreased 9-in round layer pan. Place plum halves, cut sides down and overlapping slightly, in pastry-lined pan. Mix sugar, flour and cinnamon; sprinkle over plums. Sprinkle with almonds. Bake at 375 degrees; 40 minutes until pastry is golden brown and plums are bubbly. Enjoy! |
