The funny thing is; the topping you mix and pour as the topping, actually ends up at the bottom of the pie as a crust. A recipe from my Nana. She stresses you have to use a deep dish pie plate as well as bake on the bottom rack of the stove. Ingredients:
1/4 cup shortening |
1 cup sugar |
1 egg |
1 1/4 cups flour |
1 teaspoon baking powder |
1/4 teaspoon salt |
1/2 cup whole milk |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
1/2 cup sugar |
3/4 cup hot water |
1/4 cup cocoa |
1/2 teaspoon vanilla |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees. 2. Mix the first 8 ingredients, pour into a deep dish pie plate; must be deep dished . 3. Mix the 4 ingredients for the topping; pour over top of the mixture in pie dish. 4. Bake at 350 degrees, for 35 to 45 minutes on bottom rack of oven. 5. *Thetopping should now be the at the bottom of the dish. |
