I came up with this inexpensive recipe after several attempts to get rid of these pesky critters. They breed very quickly and it's best to get a handle on them ASAP. This recipe is a combination of several recipes and I have found this to be the best! Let me know what you think. We had a bucket of Margarita Mix that unleashed quite a few of these in our house when we opened it. Ingredients:
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar |
1/2 cup boiling water |
2 teaspoons sugar |
1 -2 drop liquid dishwashing soap (not odor eliminating) |
Directions:
1. Boil water in the microwave and add sugar. Stir until dissolved. Add vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Stir gently. 2. Whenever we bring home fruit or fresh produce, I make a trap and place it right next to it. 3. As they start to evaporate, I add a bit of water and a drop of dishwashing liquid to each trap once a week or so. I replace each trap every two weeks with a fresh one during peak fruit season. 4. FYI:. 5. I have found placing this solution in a see through bright colored bowl (such as the disposable children's travel bowls) works best. I also place it on a small plate to catch any spills, as this gets sticky. Fruit flies are also attracted to light - so placing in your window sill is a good choice. In addition to the obvious fruit they are also attracted to trash, dirty dishes, and diapers. |
