This is a recipe I obtained from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Crawford Estate in Quinlan, Texas in 1982. Ingredients:
1 pint milk |
1 mixing spoon lard |
8 cups flour |
1 tablespoon sugar |
1 tablespoon salt |
1 cake yeast |
1/2 cup lukewarm water. |
Directions:
1. Scald milk and lard in quart dish. 2. Fill dish with cold water. 3. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. 4. Mix all together and let rise overnight. 5. Cut down and let rise again. 6. Cut down again and shape into loaves. 7. Let rise in pans until double its size. 8. After a batch of bread has risen have deep fat as for doughnuts ready. 9. with a fork lift a bit of dough lightly and cut off quickly with a knife and drop dough into fat. 10. Cook until brown. 11. Drain on brown paper and serve hot. |
