I've lived in Mid Michigan for most of my life. This dish is one of my favorite memories of heading Down South when growing up. Ingredients:
2 lbs okra, 1/2 slice |
buttermilk |
1 cup flour |
salt and pepper, to taste |
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper flakes (optional) |
cooking oil or bacon drippings |
Directions:
1. Marinate okra in buttermilk for about an hour; drain well. 2. Over medium high heat, add enough oil or drippings to coat the bottom of a very large skillet or cast iron pan. 3. Combine flour, salt, pepper and cayenne. Dredge okra in flour mixture. Add to hot oil and fry, turning occasionally, until nicely browned, about 30 minutes. 4. Serve. |
