Probably one of the most famous southern dishes...heck, we even have a movie named for em. These make for a great summer side dish. Ingredients:
1 large egg slightly beaten |
1/2 cup buttermilk |
1/2 cup all purpose flour, divided |
1/2 cup cornmeal |
1/3-1/2 cup grated fresh parmasean cheese |
1 tea. salt |
1/2 tea. pepper |
3 medium size green tomatoes, sliced about 1/3 slices |
vegetable oil |
salt to taste |
Directions:
1. Combine egg & buttermilk (set aside) 2. Combine 1/4 cup all purpose flour, cornmeal, 1 tea. salt and pepper in a shallow bowl 3. Dredge tomato slices in remaining 1/4 cup flour; dip in egg mixture and dredge in cornmeal mixture 4. Pour oil to about 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep in cast iron skillet 5. Drop tomatoes, in batches into HOT oil and cook 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. 6. Drain on paper towels 7. Sprinkle with salt |
