I remember mom and grandma making these, they were so good! Greatgram Edith used to make these for Bepa and take them to him when he worked at the silk mill. He'd sell them to the other workers and before she knew it, Greatgram was in the Fried Cake business! Read more !
Ingredients:
1 c sugar
1 egg
2 1/2 tsp melted shortening (greatgram's original recipe calls for lard)
1 pinch of salt
1 pinch nutmeg
1 1/2 c butter milk
flour enough to roll soft
oil to fry in
powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar (optional)
Directions:
1. combine all the ingredients.
2. pinch off dough about the size of two walnuts,
3. roll, flatten out and make a into a ring.
4. place in hot oil to fry until golden on both sides.
5. set aside to drain
6. sprinkle with sugar if desired while still warm
