There are other recipes for Flubber here, but this is the one I always use. From the Children's Museum of Houston. Great to do with the kids. Educational, too: Combining the borax and glue with water causes a chemical reaction that forms a new compound with its own unique characteristics. Notice how the flubber can be molded and then returned to its original shape unlike glue, which becomes solid, or the powdery borax. I always buy school glue on sale before school starts and save it to make this through the year. I have never had this stain and it is easier to clean up than playdoh. Most fun at room temperature. Would be great as a party favor. Ingredients:
1/3 cup water |
3 tablespoons borax, laundry booster (find next to the laundry detergent) |
2 cups water |
2 cups school glue (i use 4 4-oz bottles of elmer's school glue) |
food coloring |
Directions:
1. Put the borax in 1/3 c of warm water and stir until dissolved. Then add several large squirts of food coloring and set aside. 2. Pour the remaining 2 cups of water into a container and add the 2 cups of school glue. Stir until dissolved. 3. Add the borax solution to the glue solution. 4. Mix with your hands. Remove all jewelry! Do not use a spoon! This is really fun. 5. It takes approximately 5 minutes for all of the water to be absorbed and for the mixture to reach the right consistency. Knead firmly to encourage suspension of the glue particles. 6. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It should last two weeks or more. |
